London, Richard Green, Ken Howard: London to Venice, January 2016, no.49, illus. in colour, as Campo dei SS. Giovanni e Paolo
The Campo dei SS Giovanni e Paolo is one of the largest squares in Venice and takes its name from the towering Venetian Gothic church of the same title consecrated in 1430. To the right of its brick façade strides the equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni (1400-1475), a mercenary soldier appointed captain-general of the Venetian Republic, employed to defend its territories. This Renaissance masterpiece was sculpted by Andrea dela Verrocchio (1435-1488) and cast after his death by Alessandro Leopardi, who also designed the plinth.
Ken Howard wrote, ‘I believe Venice to be the most beautiful city in the world. So many painters have worked there including Corot, Boudin, Monet, Manet, Sargent, Sickert and Whistler, and all have said something different. Everyone should visit Venice at least once in their life, it is the only place I know where one can stand on one spot and see a composition at every turn. The light is magical, the architecture majestic and of course there are no cars. Venice is unique and will become more so as other cities become more and more alike.’ The artist cited in Ken Howard, From London to Venice, exh. cat., Richard Green, London 2016.
