We are delighted to announce that Emily Young has been presented with the ‘Lorenzo il Magnifico’ Lifetime Achievement Award at the XV Florence Biennale 2025, a prestigious prize whose past winners include Marina Abramović, David Hockney, Anish Kapoor, Gilbert & George and Vivienne Westwood. Emily is currently Guest of Honour at the Florence Biennale and is exhibiting several sculptures, including The Sun King Dreams of Peace (bronze), 2024, as part of the exhibition, ‘The Sublime Essence of Light and Darkness,’ exploring concepts of dualism and unity in contemporary art and design, from 18th-26th October.
Giovanni Cordoni, writer and organiser of the event has described the theme of the 15th Florence Biennale as dedicated to the ‘primordial, eternal union between light and darkness’ which aims to underline ‘the ability of art, as well as architecture and design, to give emotional awareness of the infinity and irresistible power of nature, a dimension in which opposites intertwine spontaneously.’ Emily’s enduring preoccupation with our relationship to the planet fits well with the theme. Her approach allows the viewer to comprehend a commonality across deep time, geology and culture. Through the combination of traditional carving skills allied with technology where necessary, she produces timeless works which marry the contemporary with the ancient, manifesting a unique, poetic presence. Each work is a call to profound thoughtfulness, looking to the future.
An interview with Emily by Kitty Grady has recently been published in A Rabbits Foot, Issue 12
