The Richard Green Gallery has long made a speciality of winter scenes, particularly those seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish landscapes prompted by the ‘Little Ice Age’ – the extraordinarily cold winters of the era. Recently with Richard Green Gallery, and now in a private collection, Anthonie Verstralen’s Winter Landscape with Skaters, c.1640, is on loan to the dazzling Skating exhibition at Palace House, Newmarket National Heritage Centre for Horseracing & Sporting Art until 29 April 2019. On view in our own galleries is Joos de Momper’s atmospheric Winter Landscape with Travellers Passing Through a Village, painted c.1615. The theme of winter sports continues to inspire: Peter Doig’s Snow Scene: Chamonix, 1995, which brilliantly uses the textures of plywood to evoke snow drifts down which skiers slalom.
