Celebrating British Modernism at Frieze Masters London
Frieze Week has become one of the most important moments in the international art calendar, marking the beginning of the autumn season and bringing collectors, artists and institutions to London from all around the world. Our Frieze Masters stand was centred around a colourful group of works ranging from Scottish Colourists to British Modernists, celebrating innovative art in these isles in the twentieth century.
A lively, discerning crowd thronged the aisles throughout the five days of the fair and business proved buoyant. Among the works sold by Richard Green at Frieze Masters were paintings by Samuel John Peploe, Cedric Morris, Ivon Hitchens and Dod Procter. We juxtaposed works by the two towering geniuses of British sculpture in the twentieth century, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Hepworth’s Vertical form (St Ives), 1969, its oval forms warmly reflecting in the polished bronze surface, was sold to a collector in the USA. The sculpture’s gentle curves and hollows were inspired by the sea-moulded pebbles and ‘pagan’ landscape of Cornwall, Hepworth’s home from 1939 to her death in 1975.
